Design a Double Decker Vegan Burger @ Slater’s 50/50

The good news is that you can design your own vegan burger at Slater’s 50/50. (The restaurant has a handful of locations in Southern California.) The bad news is that, according to the employees I asked, none of the breads are vegan. But at least you can get a lettuce wrap as a “bun.” I just go ahead and get a double-decker since it’s not the kind of burger I can eat with my hands anyway. No, I’m not a fatty! (Although, one time I did eat the entire thing in one sitting.)

In other bad news, many of the sauces are not vegan-friendly. An employee said the teriyaki sauce was not vegan. I just get the chipotle ketchup. What else? Avocado mash, pineapple, roasted red pepper, and pickles with sweet potato fries on the side. Oh, and strawberry lemonade.

Vegans should definitely win these gift certificates on the radio because what do you think the dumb meat eaters are going to order? You do know that the “50/50” stands for 50% dead animals and 50% more dead animals, so who do you think should be trying to win these gift certificates? (I tried to win again recently, but was caller #14 when you had to be #15 to win.)

“Dumb meat eater” is not just an expression. Once I overheard a woman there telling her buddy that she was diagnosed with high cholesterol and she was eating a meat burger! (You’d be surprised how many times I hear people at meat-centric restaurants mention something about “cholesterol,” but they still pack in the meat!) However, Dr. Joel Wallach, who speaks on Coast to Coast AM, claims that vegans are the ones with high cholesterol, which according to him, must be a sign of good health because he also says that Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a cholesterol deficiency. So, figure that one out.

I go the Slater’s 50/50 in the Liberty Station development (“Point Loma property that was formerly the Naval Training Center” – LibertyStation.com), which is nice because I can bring my dog (she likes the sweet potato fries.) If you park in the back corner at Cushing and Chauncey you will find a pathway to walk your dog.

Service is pretty slow, so bring a tablet (they have Wi-Fi) or magazine or at least a buddy who can keep up a conversation. (I once had to call on my cell phone to get the check!)
