As promised in an earlier post, I’m finally reviewing The Buffet at Valley View Casino & Hotel. They stopped giving out the free buffets for joining the Players Club, but you could win them on the radio anyway.
First of all, don’t go on a weekend unless you love long lines. I went once on a Sunday and once on a Monday (for lunch not dinner) and the difference in crowd size was huge. A VIP pass will only get you to wait longer, with the advantage that you can gamble while waiting.
The good news is they have enough plant based foods for you to fill your plate up with (mostly at the salad bar), but the bad news is that many of the plant-based prepared dishes could have animal products in them, but there are no labels telling you if something is vegan or not. You just have to use your best judgment. For example, you can see finely grated cheese on watermelon, but the waitress tells you that the fruit dishes are vegan. You can see the Brussels sprouts have small pieces of bacon mixed in (ewww!!!)
Just because most casino customers are ignorant and hideous is no excuse for not labeling dishes “vegan.” Asking food-workers behind the counter is a shot in the dark because many of them barely comprehend English let alone understand the word “vegan.” (Imagine working in the food industry and not knowing basic food terminology!) But sometimes you might see a chef who can answer questions better. The corn on the cob has butter.
They have a boatload of desserts, but the only vegan one I could find was the mango sorbet, which you can add berries and nuts to. But that sorbet is definitely not GMO-free. Here are the ingredients:

But why shouldn’t apple or cherry pie be vegan? A chef disclosed they have butter. How totally wrong (to put butter in a pie.)
What is even more wrong is food waste, especially in a county where beggars approach people saying they need money for food (although, I don’t know why they don’t get food stamps and beg for rent money instead, better yet confront point-one-percenters on misappropriating wealth.) ANYWAY. When I was sitting alone finishing my one scoop of mango sorbet (my buddy away taking sweet ass time looking for more food), a fat* broad descended on me accusing me of squirreling away veggies. “You have veggies! You have veggies!” And she demanded that I hand them over.
Now I understand that all-you-can-eat-buffets don’t give out boxes so that people can take home plates of food because it could be cost prohibitive. But I think customers should have the right to save their table scraps in their own containers because the potential of them taking advantage of the situation is less serious than wasting food. (Purportedly, some buffets in countries other than the USA fine customers for wasting food.)
So, I took out a small container of about a tablespoon of bean salad. She demanded to know what else I stashed so I took out small container of air. Ha! She demanded to know what else, so I took out a container of half a carrot and part of a piece of bread. I decided not to finish eating those things so I could eat the one scoop of mango sorbet, but why do something as egregious as wasting food? What horrible person does that? She demanded to know what else, but I must have forgotten that I also saved some pieces of roasted potato and pumpkin that my dog was grateful to share later that evening. Oh well!
So, she said she had to dispose of the beans, carrot, and bread. I argued with the fatty* that wasting food violates public policy, but she said public safety is the real concern. I told her I had a cooler and thus, safety is not an issue (plus, we all know I took a bagful of food home from BLD’s, the restaurant next door.) But she still maintained the matter was one of public safety. Why would she lie? Why not just admit that the restaurant is afraid of losing money to people who save more food than just what was left on their plates?
Furthermore, if public safety was the real issue, then they wouldn’t serve meat, dairy, eggs, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, GMOs, or MSG. They care as much about the customers’ health as they do about the animals they rape and murder. How sad.
