The Trick to Ordering a Vegan Sandwich at Boudin SF (Many Locations in Northern and Southern California)

I went to a “Month of Moms” event in May 2015 at Boudin SF put on by 105.7 MAX FM.  (I’m a daughter, not a breeder, by the way.)  Winners and their guests got a free lunch. Yay!

The girl in the left corner eating a meat sandwich was looking at me when I turned around, then she looked away.

But figuring out how to order a vegan sandwich here took some careful analysis of the menu with cross referencing of the “Boudin Nurture & Nutrition” pamphlet.

Dave Mason said he is on a low sodium diet, but not a low meat diet. Time for a second opinion!

The menu has many items labelled “vegetarian,” but that doesn’t mean vegan!  The California Veggie sandwich comes with Havarti cheese, which is certainly no veggie and must be rejected.  Fortunately, it doesn’t come with mayo, but rather a vegan-friendly sun-dried tomato spread.  But bad news!  The two slices of multigrain bread, however, are not vegan as the pamphlet discloses they contain one (1) mg. of cholesterol.  I failed to catch that little detail fast enough, however, as the servant helping me order a vegan lunch also failed.  But if I had requested to switch the sliced multigrain with sliced sourdough, then it should have been totally vegan.  So, do that if you go there!

You also can choose potato chips or a mixed greens salad with your sandwich, but if you want the salad, you must specify to leave out the cheese and to use a vegan dressing such as balsamic.  Tricky, huh?  Boudin SF should try simplifying things by having a vegan sandwich on the menu labelled “vegan.”

To make the California veggie sandwich vegan, reject the cheese and request sourdough slices instead of multigrain.

Because I couldn’t find bread ingredients listed anywhere, I contacted the Boudin Bakery Help Desk to ask if the loaf of Boudin Bakery Sourdough Bread was vegan-friendly and they promptly gave me the ingredients:

“The ingredients are flour, water, salt, and starter. Those are the only ingredients that comprise our sourdough breads.”

Bistro 65 at Omni La Costa Spa & Resort has Vegan Options (San Diego County)

Prizes from La Costa Spa & Resort in Carlsbad, CA are pretty popular (or at least they were before they added the “Omni” to their name.) I’ve even stayed a night in a plaza room a few years ago. (It was alright, but check-in was so late, the water slide was closed before I got my chance to slide down it!)  It’s a golf resort, so expect to see people who think they are elite.

But this time I had a $50 gift certificate that I could use on anything except alcohol or Chopra services (I don’t even know what the latter is, you’ll have to enlighten me.)  At first I considered a tennis lesson, until I saw how expensive they are.  So, I decided to go to Bistro 65 because they actually have vegan options on the menu. Yay!

I went for Mother’s Day because I’m such a nice person.  I got the stuffed Acorn Squash which was quite delicious.  The tomatoes inside were caliente.

The atmosphere at Bistro 65 is filled with your typical resort people.  I overheard the dude sitting behind me with his mother tell his daughters in an authoritative tone that they should order hamburgers.  He ordered on their behalf specifying to the servant that they should have “adult sized hamburgers with bacon on the side.”  Then I heard them grumbling about their order taking so long and I thought, “Ha ha.”  Those poor girls have such an ignorant role model that they never even realized they could have had a QUINOA BURGER.  Although, it’s not listed under the “vegan” section, so I have no idea if it is vegan.  Then the LA COSTA HONEY/ GINGER ELIXIR is listed under the “vegan” section as if honey is vegan. Someone needs to make the menu more clear.
